Week 4 Discussion Question

What was Annemarie's first test of bravery when the German soldiers came to Uncle Henrik's house? After Annemarie's mother returns from her journey, they discover that the Rosen's packet  is at the foot of the stairs when it should have been with them. When Annemarie's mother sees what it is she says "My God, it may all have been for nothing." What do you think is in the packet and why is it so important? What will Annemarie's next test of bravery be now that she has the packet in her hands? Use specific examples from the book to support your thinking!!

Make sure to answer the question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your answer. Please check your grammar, spelling, capitalization, and conventions before submitting your response.

  1. Annmarie's first test of bravery when the German soldiers came in was to be able to lie and have the fear not show in your voice. She went through it and she made sure her voice was stern and had a good oomph! To it.
I think what’s in the packet is medicine that can be very dangerous if mis-handled. I think that if it’s out and exposed from the bag that it can turn bad and if someone takes it that they will get very sick.
Annmarie's next test of bravery now that she has the packet in her hands, is that she has to get to the boat without giving away the secret of what’s really in the basket, and if she runs into a German soldier that she can just be a little girl with a silly old uncle who forgot his bread and cheese.

    1. Great post! I never thought about there being medicine in the packet. I have one question for you though do you think that medicine is the only thing? Nice job!!

    2. Great reply Sofia! If the packet has medicine in it that is deadly why would it be so important?

  2. Annemarie’s first test of bravery was when she spoke up to the soldiers and tell them who died. I know this because the text says, “ Who died?” No one answered. They watched Annemarie, and she realized that the officer was directing the question at her. Now she knew for certain what Uncle Henrik had meant when he had talked to her in the barn. To be brave came more easily if you knew nothing. She swallowed. “
My great-aunt Birte,” she lied, in a firm voice.” This shows bravery because most kids wouldn’t be brave enough to lie to a Nazi soldier.

I think that there is all the information about Sweden for the Rosens, proof that the Rosens are Jewish to give to the Sweden Government, and directions for Uncle Henrik in the packet. I think this because the Rosens don’t know a thing about Sweden except for that it is still free, Uncle Henrik most likely doesn’t know how to get to Sweden, and because the Sweden Government needs to know who is Jewish.

I think that the packet is important because if there is directions to get to Sweden then Uncle Henrik won’t have directions so h the Rosens could end up in Germany or somewhere that isn’t free. I also think that the packet is important because if the packet has information about the Rosens being Jewish then Sweden needs to know who to protect if the Nazis do invade Sweden.

I think that Annemarie's next test of bravery will be if she runs into a soldier. I think this because if she runs into a soldier she will have to talk to him and tell her what she is doing.

    1. Mackenzie, great RAD responses and using specific details from the text. I like how you perfectly stated what Annemarie said to the soldiers about her “Great Aunt Birte.”
In the second question, I like your thinking about Sweden. But I don’t think that Uncle Henrik doesn't know where Sweden is, I mean it is just across the sea but maybe there is a specific place where they need to enter in on and he doesn't know where. Good thinking on that.
Keep up the good work and the details!

    2. I totally agree. Most people aren’t brave enough to lie to a soldier that can very easily kill you. I wouldn’t be brave enough. You blew me away when you said “proof that the Rosens are Jewish to the Sweden government.

  3. Annemarie's first test of bravery was when the soldiers came in and asked who had died she didn’t know so she lied “My great Brite.” Everyone was so relieved when she said that instead of “I don’t know.”

I have no idea what I think is in the packet. My guess of why it is important would be it is something to help Henrik get to Sweden. Her next act of bravery will be when she is running the basket to Uncle Henrik. I know this because in the book on page # 76 it says ““it is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything”” Annmarie doesn't know everything she just knows that the packet is important. She doesn't even know what's in it.

    1. WOW!! Great post. Do you think that Annemarie also didn't know what to say because she didn't actually know if someone died since her mom lied to her about great-aunt Birte? Great thinking!!!!! :) :) :) :)

  4. I think that Annemarie's first test of bravery is when the soldiers came into the funeral because when she lied and said it is“My Great Aunt Birte”, it took a lot of bravery to tell that lie, because if the German soldiers found out and looked in the casket and saw she was lying she probably would have died.
I really don’t have enough info to guess what is in the packet, but if I had to take a wild guess I would think it is something really important to make it to Sweden, because the mom told Annemarie to take the packet to Uncle Henrik now, and not when he came back from the trip.
Annemarie's next test of bravery is the packet, because if the soldiers bump into Annemarie's and ask where she is going and what she is doing, she will have to be brave and tell another lie.
