The Johansens make a dangerous decision to hide Ellen from the Germans. Why is this decision dangerous for their family? Why was it important that Ellen remove her Star of David necklace when the soldiers visited the apartment?

  1. It was a dangerous decision for the Johansens to hide Ellen because if you were hiding Jews in World War 2 you could get killed, put in a death camp, or put in a work camp. It was important for Ellen to take off her Star David necklace because if the soldiers found her wearing it they could know that she is Jewish and that the Johansens were hiding her. Also because Ellen could get relocated and the Johansens could get killed for going against the law. The Johansens made this decision because they wanted to try and keep Ellen safe from the German soldiers that are trying to relocate the Jews.

    1. You are correct, Mackenzie. Hiding Ellen put the Johansens in serious danger, however, they did the right thing. The alternative was a concentration camp. It was very lucky Annemarie was able to get the Star of David necklace off Ellen before the soldiers came in, because they would have discovered it was indeed Ellen Rosen.

  2. It is dangerous for the Johansens to hide Ellen because if Ellen is found in the Johansens house both Ellen and the Johansens would be killed. But Ellen is Annemarie's best friend and Annemarie and her family would do anything to keep Ellen alive. Why Ellen had to take off her star of David necklace when the Nazis came is because every Jewish person wears one. If Ellen was caught with the necklace she would be killed.

    1. At the part were the German solders came into their house when Ellen had to lie to the solders that her name was Lise. Do you think lieing is ok in the war?

    2. I think it is ok to lie in some situations like in number the stars Ellen and Annemarie are lying because Ellen is jewish, so they have to lie or else they could get killed for no good reason, and the reason is not really true. Like Ellen had to rip of her necklace because she is jewish and a german soldier came in and she had to tell them that her name was Lise ( because the german know the names of jewish people and Ellen is jewish) and her dad had to show them the scrapbook that said that her name was Lise. That’s is a reasonable reason to lie because her life was at stake.

  3. The Johansens decision is very dangerous for the family because if the Germans found out that Ellen was Jewish, the German soldiers would assume that the whole family is that religion,Jewish so the soldiers would capture the whole family. The Johansens made the brave decision to take the risk and hide Ellen because if this plan does come out ok, she would survive. It was important that Ellen removed her star of David necklace because that is the sign of Jewish religion, and if the Germans found that she was wearing that necklace, the Germans would know she is Jewish and capture her.

    2. I agree that if the soldiers find Ellen's Jewish necklace they could think the whole family is Jewish and relocate all of them when the Johansens aren't even Jewish.

  4. The decision is dangerous for the family because if the Nazi soldiers found out that they were hiding Ellen a Jew then they would probably punish them for hiding them. Also for lying to them about it the first time, then sending them off somewhere to hide them. They can’t hide them forever.
It was important for Ellen to remove her Star David necklace because that is a sign that she is a Jew not a German and they would check for a necklace and if they found it then they would take it away and punish Annemarie's family for hiding her.

  5. Mrs. Santos (Lisa - Lindsey’s mom):
It is dangerous for the Johansen’s to hide Ellen because she is Jewish. Anyone that is Jewish or helps a Jew is defying the soldier’s orders. Anyone who goes against the soldiers’ orders and beliefs could be killed.

It is important for Ellen to hide the necklace because it is a Star of David, which is an important symbol for Jews. If Ellen were to be found with this necklace in her possession, the soldiers would immediately know that she was Jewish and take her away and possibly the Johansen family, too, for befriending Ellen - a Jew. Don’t you think Annamarie risked her life by actually holding the necklace in her hand?
