Week 3 Discussion Question

Annemarie discovers that her aunt who died, Great-aunt Birte, isn't a real person. She knows her Uncle Henrik and Mama are lying to her. Why would her mother and uncle lie to her? What do you think the funeral really is? Who do you think the people were arriving at the funeral if it wasn't real?

Make sure to answer the question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your answer. Please check your grammar, spelling, capitalization, and conventions before submitting your response.

  1. I think that her Mother and Uncle lied to her because they knew that Annemari can be a blabber mouth sometimes and they needed whatever they were hiding to stay classified. It’s either that or they can sometimes just want to keep stuff to themselves. I think the funeral is really a plan to get Ellen out of there and to Sweden. Maybe they’re gonna sneak Ellen out of there along with her parents on the boat and if anyone comes they’ll think that they’re just having a funeral not sneaking someone to Sweden. I think that people were arriving at the funeral even though it wasn’t real because it’ll make it look more real and believable. Maybe they were trying to get Ellen to fall for it and everyone else to make it less suspicious.

    1. How is Annemarie a blabber mouth? If any thing Kirsti is the blabber mouth. I think that because on the train she told the soldiers Ellen was jewish. Before that she said that they ran into the soldiers. Can you explain that to me a little more?

  2. I think that her mother and uncle would lie to her so she would come to whatever they are planning on doing. I think this because they think that if they tell the truth Annemarie won’t come. I think that the funeral really is to talk about something having to do with the war and the Rosens. They might be talking about if somebody sees Mr. and Mrs. Rosen they have to keep the hiding spot or spots secret. I also think that they could be telling the people about the relocation with the Jews and that Ellen and her parents are hiding so the people have to keep it a secret. Finally I think that the people at the funeral are the Rosen’s family and friends. I think that they are the Rosen’s family and friends because the text on page 81 said, “Ellen was still outside. But in a moment the door opened and she returned-held tightly, like a little girl, her bare legs dangling, agianst her fathers chest. Her mother beside them.”

  3. The mom and Uncle Henrik told Annemarie the lie first of all to be brave like it said on page 77 “to help you be brave because we love you”, and to not spill the Idea of Mama and Uncle Henrik. I think the people were family and friends of the Rosens so they could be in hiding, and the soldiers would not know if The Rosens were there at Uncle Henrik's hiding, because they think it was a funeral. I think the funeral was a plan to hide Ellen in the casket and take her to sweden, and all the other Rosens as well, by boat across the water.

  4. Why her mother and uncle would lie to Annemarie is to help Annemarie be brave, the book states that on page 77. I don’t know what the funeral is really. I don’t have enough info to know. I think the people who were at the “fake funeral” were the Rosens friends and family because later in the chapter the Rosens arrive at uncle Henrik's house.

    1. Even know, you didn’t know for sure what the funeral was I thought you had a great thought on what you thought instead. I also think that it was the Rosens they took in hiding, and then going to Sweden.
